Maine Motorcyclist Political Action Committee

In 1997 the Maine Motorcyclist Political Action Committee was formed to comply with Federal statutes.

The Maine Motorcyclist Political Action Committee is the only voice for biker rights at the State level that is registered with the State Ethics Committee and represents, the now over, 40,000 bikers in the State of Maine.  Attendance is open to anyone interested in Biker rights.  The sole focus is on biker rights.

Every two years the MMPAC sends a questionnaire to the candidates running for elected office.  This is a two-fold item.  It is an educational tool and also a questionnaire for the candidates to respond to.  The results are tabulated and appear in the United Bikers of Maine Newsletter prior to Election Day.

The 2006-2007 year was an active one with the new position of Liaison between the UBM and the MMPAC.

Members from UBM and the PAC sat in on meetings with the State on the distribution of a $100,000 grant from NHSTA, which resulted in the State producing some radio and Television adds aimed at vehicle awareness of bikers.  Also a map of Maine and some selected bike rides is being published.

During the winter the PAC testified in favor of a bill to enact a Veteran’s Motor Cycle plate that the Governor has recently signed.  We also testified against a bill to cause a $300 license fee for any motorized event.  This was killed in Committee.

On May 10 UBM and the MMPAC had the annual Tea with the Governor for Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month.  At that event the Governor named Roger Howard and Eric Fuller to act as advisors with the DOT on Motorcycle Issues.  Some of the issues being discussed, at this time, are rumble strips and in particular centerline rumble strips on secondary roads, motorcycle awareness danger signs for milled pavement, rumble strips, etc. the type and amount of crack filler used to repair the roads and non-triggering left hand turn signals.  All of these issues are ongoing at this time.

If you are interested in becoming politically active on biker rights, you are welcome to attend any MMPAC meeting, which meets the third Sunday of every month from 1pm to 3pm promptly at the Weathervane Restaurant in Brewer from Sept. to May.
